Brain Injury & Neurological Assessment: Evaluating Cognitive Health

COMPREHENSIVE CLINICAL EVALUATIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURIES, NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS, OR THE COGNITIVE EFFECTS OF MEDICAL ILLNESS.

What is an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Assessment?

An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth. This includes traumatic events, such as accidents, as well as "medical" brain injuries caused by illness, infection, or neurological disease.

While hospital scans (MRI or CT) show the physical structure of the brain, they cannot measure how a condition impacts a person’s ability to work, study, or live independently. A neuropsychological assessment measures the actual "output" of the brain to identify how these conditions affect daily life.

Conditions and Injuries Assessed

At LDB Clinical Neuropsychology, we provide assessment and management planning for a broad range of neurological and medical events:

  • Traumatic Events: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from falls or accidents, and persistent symptoms following a concussion.

  • Vascular Events: Ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke and TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack).

  • Neurological Diseases: Monitoring cognitive changes in conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease, and Epilepsy.

  • Brain Tumours: Assessing cognitive function before and after surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.

  • Infections: Evaluating the long-term impact of Meningitis, Encephalitis, or other neuro-inflammatory conditions.

  • Hypoxic Events: Brain injury resulting from a lack of oxygen (e.g., following a cardiac arrest).

  • Toxic/Metabolic Factors: Cognitive changes related to long-term substance use or metabolic disorders.

Common Symptoms We Investigate

Neurological conditions often result in "invisible" challenges. We provide objective measurement for:

  • Cognitive Fatigue: A profound sense of mental exhaustion that does not improve with rest.

  • Memory and Learning: Difficulty retaining new information or recalling past events.

  • Executive Functioning: Challenges with planning, multitasking, and decision-making.

  • Information Processing: Feeling "slowed down" or struggling to follow fast-paced conversations.

  • Attention and Focus: Being easily distracted or unable to concentrate on a single task.

  • Changes in Emotion or Personality: Increased irritability, loss of motivation (apathy), or difficulty regulating mood.

The Purpose of the Evaluation

An assessment serves several critical functions in the management of a neurological condition:

  1. Baseline Measurement: Establishing a "snapshot" of current functioning to monitor if a condition is stable, improving, or progressing.

  2. Treatment Planning: Providing data to help Neurologists and GPs tailor your medical management.

  3. Rehabilitation Support: Identifying specific cognitive strengths that can be used to "bypass" or compensate for weaker areas.

  4. Functional Capacity: Providing evidence for NDIS access, insurance claims, or workplace adjustments.

The Assessment Process

1.

Clinical Interview

A review of your medical history, current symptoms, and how they impact your daily routine.

2.

Testing 2.png

Cognitive/ Neuropsychological Testing

Standardised tasks measuring various domains of brain function (e.g., memory, speed, and reasoning).

3.

Analysis

Comparing your performance against normative data to identify significant deviations from expected levels.

4.

Reporting & Feedback

A clear explanation of the findings and a set of practical, evidence-based recommendations for home, work, or study.

Support for Families and Carers

Neurological conditions can change the way a person interacts with the world, which can be challenging for loved ones. Our reports help families understand that certain behaviours—such as forgetfulness or irritability—are symptoms of a neurological condition rather than a choice. This understanding is often the first step in improving relationships and reducing carer stress.

Navigating Neurological Change

Living with a neurological condition or recovering from a brain injury requires a clear understanding of your cognitive resources. Our goal is to move beyond the diagnosis and focus on your functional potential. By identifying exactly how your brain is processing information, we can empower you with the strategies needed to navigate your daily life with greater confidence.
